About the artist
Albert Ràfols-Casamada (Barcelona, 1923 – 2009), who saw himself in equal measure both as painter and poet, is regarded as one of the most multifaceted Catalan artists of his time. In the course of his long career he created an impressive and comprehensive portfolio of highly estimated artistic works. He was greatly influenced by the Œuvre of Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Braque and to an equal extent by the theories of American Abstract Expressionism. Albert Ráfols-Casamada developed a lyrical style of abstraction that underlined the simplicity of his spontaneous approach. His work can be seen in several international exhibitions and can also be found in the collections of many museums such as the Guggenheim Museum, New York, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid, Fundació Juan Miró, Barcelona, as well as in the Tate Gallery and the British Museum, London. He has received several awards including the Catalan National Award for the Visual Arts in 2003 and an award of the National Museum of Catalan Art in 2009.
